Portuguese Wine
A rich history stands behind Portuguese wine. The influences of ancient civilizations are in this country’s wine-making origins. As early as medieval times, Portugal was already a major exporter of wines. It is believed “port” was named after the trade city of Oporto. The concept of regulating wine production and trade was founded when Portugal’s Douro Valley was established as the first demarcated region. Skilled winemakers from the Douro Valley and other areas of the country prepare ports, fortified with brandy, according to their heritage. The result is glorious perfume and mellowed fruit flavor in bottles that are often served as dessert wines. Also consider the Portuguese wine, Madeira, as an accompaniment to your favorite cheese.
Portuguese Port Wine
Sweet and silky Portuguese Port Wine can be carefully aged in oak for decades so it adopts a mature quality and lustrous amber shade. Younger ports, still years in the cask, provide a vivacious fruit and nut flavor. Each maker’s maturing process delivers individualized traits to the various ports. Some combine aging in the cask with additional bottle aging. Look for “vintage” on the label if you are in search of a superior quality Portuguese port wine from an extraordinary grape harvest. A winery usually only declares a vintage harvest a few times each decade! Place a vintage bottle with other wine accessories in your wine gift baskets designed for extra special occasions.
