Italian Wine Tasting

Italy has a 3000 year viticulture history.  Its landscape is covered in vines. There are 4 key wine growing zones which break down into 20 wine growing regions.

Piedmont is known for outstanding Barolo and Mascato d'Asti.  We have selected a great value Barolo, a delicious Mascato d'Asti, and the seldom tasted Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato.  The Ruché is a small production indigenous grape to the hills northwest of the town Asti.  The Ruché is a medium bodied wine which is flora on the nose. Its body is characterized by a pleasant acidity and soft tannins.

Puglia is flat and sun-scorched throughout the summer.  It's very similar to California's Central Valley.  Puglia also produces more wine than any other region in Italy. We have selected two great everyday drinking wines from Locorotondo and Salice Salentino.  Both are made from local grapes and are excellent values.

Our Italian Tasting ran from 5:30pm - 8:00pm.  Hoyt Ogilvie from JK Wines presented our selections.

The featured appetizer cheese ball was the Wind & Willow Tuscan Olive Mix.  These cheese ball mixes are great for any party.  They are so easy to make too!  All you need is cream cheese and butter.  Add some crackers or Italian toast and you have a crowd pleaser for any event.

The Wind & Willow Cheese ball Mixes are made in Mt. Vernon Missouri.

Jim & Evey

Jim & Evey were among the guest at the tasting.  Jim really loved the Rose Salice Salentino while Evey prefered the Lodali Barolo.

The clear winner of the night is the Lodali Moscato D'Asti.  The Moscato is a very easy drinking wine.  This wine makes a wonderful accompaniment to many desserts, especially those made with fruit such as peach, pear, apple, and berries.

While I enjoyed all the wines my personal favorite is the Lodali Barolo.  I found the Barolo not to be overpowering.  The amount of tannins felt very balanced.  This Barolo is made to be consumed young.  It's a very good value for the price.

Let’s not forget the other 3 wines.  They were all great and I was happy to personally finish off the remaining tasting bottles.

Interactive Wine Scoring

To make the tasting more interactive we decided to hand out personal score sheets.  All those who filled out the personal scoring sheets were entered into a drawing for a free wine of their choosing.

  1. Apperance
  2. Aroma
  3. Body
  4. Taste
  5. Finish

The above categories were judged on a 5 point scale.  The max score on our sheets is 25 points.

Our Drawing winner was Marsha Butler.  She selected the Salice Salentino.
