For over a decade importer Jorge Ordonez has been traveling the dusty trails and back roads of Spain, looking for great wineries and great wines to import. Mr. Ordonez has encouraged Spanish vintners to come into the 21st century and adopt new technology in the vineyard and winery in order to catch up with the New World in producing better, fresher and more well made wines. One of his most recent finds is Venta Morales, located in the region of La Mancha (south of Madrid) which is the hot and arid land featured in Cervantes' masterpiece, Don Quixote. Sourced from a 33 year old vineyard with very small yields of two tons per acre, this Venta Morales Tempranillo 2009 is 100% tank fermented to preserve the wine's vibrant freshness and thus no oak gets in the way of the rich Tempranillo aromas and flavors. Deep and extracted with a dark purple color, the aromas that jump from the glass are of black cherry and dark berry. Full bodied on the palate, it has rich and savory flavors of black cherry and raspberry along with hints of tobacco, chocolate and green herbs. Plenty of hearty Tempranillo flavors, coupled with a good balance of tannins and acidity, make this wine a great match for spring and summer grilled foods like beef, pork and caramelized vegetables. Ripe and round in the mouth, it's an easy every day quaffer that over delivers for the price.
