The Bodegas Ateca winery is a new project between the winemaking Juan Gil family of Jumilla and the top Spanish wine importer, Jorge Ordonez. The grapes for this new project were sourced from 60- to 80-year-old vines whose already low yields were reduced an additional 70% by the weather conditions of the 2009 vintage. Purple to the rim, this is remarkably deep for a wine of this price made from Garnacha. (aka Grenache). The wine offers smoky aromas and flavors of red fruits, including cherry strawberry and raspberry. Concentrated, ripe, and balanced on the palate, it's fleshy and sweet with subtle spice, mineral and floral qualities adding interest. Not just a simple "fruit bomb," this wine displays impressive staying power on the finish. In fact, it was the top selling hit of last Saturday's "Bang for the Buck" in-store wine tasting. It's a no-brainer match up with barbecue or burgers.
