R Wines, the producer of our wine of the week, Marquis Phillips Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, was founded in 2005 by partners Dan Philips, and Chris Ringland. Chris is one of world's leading and most gifted winemakers, leading teams of winemakers and viticulturalists in managing vineyards Australia wide. R Wines are meant to be not merely sound and well-made, but stylish, compelling, hand-crafted and delicious. Indeed the Marquis Philips wines are some of the most power-packed wines in all of Australia. They were born of a simple goal: to control the entire winemaking process, soup to nuts, from concept to vineyard, to market, to wine style, to price. The winemaker's ultimate aim is to create wines that are pleasure-giving, dark, ripe, gulpable and loud, yet with a sweet, powerful and long finish.
The Marquis Philips Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, produced from grapes grown in McLaren Vale, is purple, almost black colored, such is its density and concentration, with a huge nose of toasty black fruits, spice box, and black licorice. In the mouth, bold flavors of blackberry, blueberry and boysenberry are integrated with vanilla, mocha, tobacco and leather. Velvety, sweet, and opulent on the palate, it has plenty of concentration and a pure, fruit-filled finish, Powerful stuff, it needs some swirl time in the glass to really open up. It's a big mouthful of wine designed to provide sensual pleasure; those seeking subtlety, elegance and low alcohol should look elsewhere.
The authoritative Robert Parker's Wine Advocate states that the current releases are "unequivocally...the finest collection of Marquis Philips wines since the label was started in 2000" and rates the Marquis Philips Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 at 90 points (90 - 100 points
= "excellent").
