Plungerhead is an unlikely name for a wine, but then the vintners, The Other Guys (an branch of the Sebastiani winery family) think wine should be fun. To that end, you'll find the story of the wine's namesake and loyal employee, Edgar D. Plongerheid, on the back label, while the front label sports Eddie's image, dressed in a coat and tie, but with wine barrel shorts and a red toilet plunger for a hat! Mia and August Sebastiani's kids just want to have a bit of fun with their wines (Hey Mambo and Moobuzz are a couple of their other labels) but they take their winemaking seriously and veteran winemaker Richard Bruno's signature is on the back of every bottle as a guarantee of a good wine and a good time.

This Plungerhead Zinfandel 2008 has a serious heritage, coming from low yielding, head trained, old vines (30 - 60 years old) in Lodi. In fact, the selection for Plungerhead comes from only four select blocks in a specific vineyard, farmed for maximum Zinfandel flavor. Deep and darkly extracted in color, this wine gives off Zin-like brambly aromas of blueberry and black currant with hints of mushroom, molasses and nutmeg. On the palate, the blueberry and raspberry flavors erupt into a sweet symphony buffered with cocoa powder, cedar and cinnamon. Big and full bodied with virtually no harsh tannins, the wine's flavors glide to the lengthy finish, embellished with a lingering bit of mocha, toasted marshmallow, dried cranberry and sweet oak. A great wine for summer picnics centered around beef, pork and sausages from the grill.

As an added attraction, Plungerhead is sealed with ZORK, a revolutionary new wine closure with the convenience of screw cap and the celebration of cork. ZORK is, easy to remove by hand, simple to reseal and is completely recyclable. To open ZORK, you pull the plastic tear tab, unwind and remove it. As you pull out the ZORK, you’ll hear it pop. To reseal, push ZORK back in. No corkscrew. No crumbling. No cork taint. No worries. Imagine that: being able to drink a bottle of wine without the aid of any special mechanic's tools.
