In 1927, Arturo Cousiño, grandfather of the current generation of winemakers at Chile's Cousino Macul winery, began cellaring a special selection of Cabernet Sauvignon to serve only to his friends, family and guests. This wine became known as Antiguas Reservas and was always meant to be the finest wine they could make. The 2007 version is the 80th vintage of this classic Chilean Cabernet but one that you too can share with your own friends and family.
The Cabernet Sauvingnon vines that produced this wine were propagated from cuttings that were brought over from Bordeaux, France in the 19th century. Planted in and sourced entirely from family owned and sustainably farmed vineyards in Chile's Maipo Valley, the Cousino Macul Cabernet Sauvignon Antiguas Reservas 2007 is produced using only the best fruit and made in a limited production. It carries the typical new world style but with old world elegance that has been Cousino Macul's trademark. More like a restrained Bordeaux than a flashy Napa cab, it’s aged in French oak barrels for a year and then another six months in the bottle.
Deeply colored, it starts out with intense aromas of blackberry and blueberry, as well as cocoa powder and barrel spice. In the mouth, flavors of blackberry, black cherry and dark plum are the mainstays, mingled with notes of black olive, tobacco and freshly grilled herbs. Well structured and elegant, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon has the structure and framework to evolve and develop for a minimum of five years, though its flavors are deliciously accessible right now.
A top scoring wine, year after year. Obviously it's a classic and enduring example of Chilean Cabernet, but priced under $20 a bottle ($17.99), it is also an unbeatable value for a wine that has proven to age gracefully even for 10 – 15 years after release. In fact, Wine Advocate suggests that if you are just starting a wine cellar, this would be an ideal (and inexpensive) wine to lay down for the future.
