Perhaps the most interesting wine you'll taste all year. Ripe, rich, red berry fruit flavors mingle with intriguing spicy qualities. Na Vota("olden times") is made from Ruche grapes, a rare variety indigenous to the hills around the village of Castagnole Monferrato. Only small quantities exist of this wine: Piedmont's best-kept secret...until now!
Ruch‚ is a century-old vine of unknown origin though it is said to have been imported from France early last century. Many a legend have reached us on its name, but the most reliable one tells of a farmhouse, named "Rocca", where some friars used to make a sweet wine to present the inhabitants of the nearby Poggio Castel with, hence the name of "Ruch‚".
Because it is a more delicate vine than Barbera and Grignolino, it should be pruned when Spring already approaches. It blossoms a little later than the other vines and its leaves are of a smarter green with closer branches. Bunches are long and rare, with round grapes and plenty of pips, always sweet and forward.
Here it is made in the traditional way; austere, it goes well with game and cheese. There are hints of violet, hay and vanilla in its fragrance, typical of first-class reds. The body warm to the palate, Ruch‚ is an exceptionally well balanced wine, of inviting softness and long-lasting flavour.
Let it reach room temperature before serving to enhance its character. It is good new or mature alike.
