90 Points - Josh Raynolds - International Wine Cellar
"Medium ruby. Pungent, wild, expanding aromas of cherry, smoked meat, lavender and licorice. Quite meaty and sauvage on the palate, with a rich, thick texture and very ripe dark plum flavor. Impressively concentrated, powerful wine that combines a distinct wildness with noteworthy sweetness of fruit."
St Joseph is an extensive appellation running over much of the left bank of the Rhône between Côte Rôtie, outside Vienne, and Valence. The Chaves have been working with wine since the 15th century and if they are better known today for Hermitage, they have in fact been making St Joseph for a good deal longer. Indeed the Chave cellars are in the village of Mauve, one of the top crus of the St Joseph appellation. The Chaves own vines in St Joseph, but this cuvée was Jean-Louis Chave’s idea for producing his idea of how St Joseph should taste. He has achieved this by buying barrels of wine from several of his friends and blending them together. Sweetly centred syrah that will give great pleasure. Now to 2009
