The 2004 Branding Iron definitely shows the signature of western Oakville. This wine has beautiful flavors of black cherry and wild berry, layered with sweet impressions of vanilla and spice. Over the years, the body of this wine has gotten much richer and this 2004 is no exception. The middle palate is fat and coating and the ripe, jammy flavors, complemented by the oak, progress into a warm, lingering finish.
Vineyard Description:
Named for the branding iron owned by the proprietor, the four-acre Branding Iron Vineyard lies in western Oakville, close to the base of the Mayacamas Mountains. The vineyard is comprised of well-drained clay loam and the vines are vertically trellised to maximize sunlight and open the canopy. The area’s warm climate and sun exposure in both the morning and afternoon is perfect for slowly ripening the fruit, which often benefits from a long hang time.
Harvest Notes:
The 2004 growing season was quite early this year with bloom starting two weeks ahead of usual. The warm spring and summer months provided ideal ripening weather for the vines and although crop loads were a bit low for Cabernet, the vineyard looked good. Sugars developed before flavors were ripe and so we let the fruit hang on the vines for a few more weeks. This vineyard was picked with excellent fruit flavors in mid September, almost one month sooner than last year.
